In Spring 2023 I took a course that introduced me to Open Education Resources (OERs). It was a term that I heard before, but never truly researched how it all worked. After learning more about it in this course, I decided it is something I want to add the programming courses I teach. Now I need to figure out the Web 2.0 technology needed to support it.

Open pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and the use of open educational resources (OERs). It is an educational philosophy that encourages educators to empower students to take control of their own learning and to work together to create and share knowledge in a collaborative and inclusive environment.

Open Educational Resources (OER) play a crucial role in open pedagogy. OER are teaching and learning resources that are freely available to anyone, and can be modified, adapted, and redistributed by anyone as well. They include textbooks, videos, lesson plans, quizzes, and other educational materials that are released under an open license.

Open pedagogy promotes the use of OER as a way to provide students with affordable and accessible learning resources, which can enhance their learning experience by enabling them to access high-quality resources regardless of their financial circumstances. Moreover, OER can be modified and adapted to meet the specific needs and learning styles of individual students, which can help to personalize the learning experience and make it more effective.

I am currently in the process of creating a list of tools to try out this summer in preparation for my fall courses. The tool needs to be able to allow the students to edit collaboratively, have the ability to easily edit and publish the final version of each chapter as we create them. I have considered using simple collaboration tools like Google Docs or Microsoft Teams, but I would like to offer the students a fuller experience. Another limitation is that I need to use free or open source tools.

I plan to look at the following tools and will be blogging about my experience:

  1. GitBook
  2. Wikibooks
  3. OER Commons Open Author
  4. Scalar
  5. Bookdown

  1. Vanessa, what a great website! And thank you for sharing! Because I am unable to register for this course OERS due to its limited availability, I am grateful that you have provided additional information about the courses.

With your blog ideas, I will undoubtedly become a regular reader of your blog! Please keep up the good work! Please let me know if the product lists expand and if you need help with the review! I’m all hands!

    1. I actually haven’t take EME5250 yet. I will be taking next year as part of my certificate. My interest was sparked in another course. I will definitely be updating the list as I go along.
