At the start of this week I signed up for Reddit as part of working on Community Paper due in the next couple weeks. Until about 7 months ago, I had never even been on Reddit. I was aware of its existence but didn’t know much about what it really was or how it worked. Even after I was introduced to it by a new friend who loves sending me posts from the site, I didn’t sign up. Reddit like Twitter, seemed like the wild-wild west to me. Anything goes!

Although I still see it this way, for the purposes of this assignment I have joined. I was not sure if I would be a lurker or participant on this platform. There are some benefits to participating here rather than the Facebook group I also joined for the assignment. On Reddit, I have much more anonymity. I ended up with the generic username because the site froze as I was trying to sign up. It is not liked to any of my other platforms, and the user account is very generic.

The one thing I did like about Reddit compared to most other social media sites, is that you can be a lurker without an account. You can search and view all the threads without ever signing up. Even Instagram and TikTok after a few views asks you sign up. I don’t think it is a platform I would encourage students to use because of the unregulated nature of the platform, but I will be diving into the CrossFit subreddit that I joined.

  1. I recently signed up for Reddit as well. I joined some community of interests but I dont think I still fully understand the “purpose” of this platform, lol! I’ve found some interesting threads though and feed deep in several rabbit holes.

    1. It is great for rabbit holes. I don’t know if I know the purpose either. I just learnt about Karma point thanks to Young’s blog post, so I will be looking into those.

  2. Reddit could go wild!!! A few my fav subreddit: “r/AskAcademia” “r/productivity” “r/meme” “r/CompSocial”. Also some local channel: r/fsu and r/Tallahassee.
